I don’t know any Korean. Any tips for navigating a completely foreign language?
- Most young people in Seoul speak some amount of English, but we recommend learning a few basic words and phrases, such as hello and thank you, to interact with locals. All street signs are written in both hangul (Korean alphabet) and the Roman alphabet (the letters we use in English) to assist in navigation.
- Google Translate or Apple Translate will get you a long way! You can use the photo feature to take a picture of signs and menus and it will translate them to English. Or, you can have a Korean speaker speak into your phone and it will translate what they’re saying to English for you. Typing out your message in English and having someone read it in Korean is also very helpful!
