What is EES/ETIAS?

There are several countries that have begun to utilize border entry systems such as the Entry/Exit System (EES) and European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS).

EES utilizes digital logs of entry and exit dates with face scans and fingerprints upon arrival.  Many countries have begun using a version of this for processing travelers entering their country. There is no fee and no extra form for this procedure.

ETIAS pre-screens travelers prior to departure. It requires a fee  and a form to process so that you are able to show customs upon arrival. This process can take a few days and must be done before arrival. Once approved, it will be valid for three years or until your passport expires for any stay up to 90 days. ETIAS is scheduled to begin sometime in 2027. Other countries have Electronic Travel Authorizations (ETAs) in place which can change from year to year.

Americans travelling to the United Kingdom must apply for a separate UK Electronic Travel Authorisation.

Ireland is currently exempt from both EES and ETIAS.
